Statement by Permanent Representative of Ukraine Ambassador Yurii Klymenko at the 33rd session of the UN Human Rights Council (a.i. 4)
33rd session of the UN Human Rights Council
Agenda item 4
Intervention by Permanent Representative of Ukraine Ambassador Yurii Klymenko
September 19, 2016
My delegation took the floor to once again draw attention to the illegal and inhuman actions by the Russian Federation towards the citizens of Ukraine unlawfully kept by this state on its territory and in the occupied parts of Ukraine. Dozens of them are being persecuted in the occupied Crimea, 16 are considered missing, at least 29 - unlawfully kept in custody, 115 – kept hostages in Donbas.
Capture, torture, persecution and repressions have become a common practice for Moscow despite repeated strong calls from the Ukrainian side and the international community. Cases of Oleg Sentsov, Oleksandr Kolchenko, Ilmi Umerov, Ahtem Ciygoz and of many others are vocal examples of Russia`s pursuing the notorious path of political repressions and trials known from the era of Stalinism.
The decision by the occupational Russian authorities to reject claims by the side of defense of Deputy Chairman of the Crimean Tatar Mejlis Ilmi Umerov, the act of punitive psychiatry against him and holding him for 3 weeks without medications for diabetes and heart disease are vivid illustrations of such inhuman policies. It`s worth mentioning that the Russian “Memorial” human rights center has recognized four illegally detained Crimean Tatars as political prisoners. The human rights defenders consider the case of these detainees as an element of the Russian repressive policies.
Ukraine once again demands from the Russian Federation to stop immediately all obvious, politically motivated farces and to release all illegally detained citizens of Ukraine.
We also reiterate our appeal to the international community to exert all measures possible towards Russia in order to immediately release all Ukrainian political prisoners and hostages and cease its totalitarian practice of suppressing human rights.
I thank you.
