“Ukraine and Spain are genuine partners in the mutual support of territorial integrity”

30 October, 16:14

This was stated during negotiations on October 30 in Kyiv by Foreign Ministers of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin and Spain Alfonso Dastis. The Ministers were united in the fact that such mutual support is not only important in the context of the national interest of Ukraine and Spain, but also for the preservation of the European unity and the recognition of the rule of law. In this regard, Pavlo Klimkin stressed that Russia wants to use the events in Spain in the context of a hybrid war against the European project, trying to destabilize the situation and weaken Europe.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Spain noted that his country appreciates the position of Ukraine in support the unity of Spain in the context of the situation around Catalonia. Alfonso Dastis also emphasized that Spain will continue to support Ukraine in the issue of de-occupation of Crimea, in particular within the framework of Ukraine's initiatives in international organizations: "We will support Ukraine's efforts as long as Crimea is under the aggressor, until it is occupied," said the Head of the MFA of Spain.

Ministers noted the potential of trade and economic cooperation, which has recently shown positive trends. In this regard, it was agreed that the next meeting of the Ukrainian-Spanish Mixed Intergovernmental Commission on Economic and Industrial Cooperation will be held in the near future. The Spanish Minister noted that Ukraine's progress on the issue of reform creates good prerequisites for increasing Spanish investment in Ukraine.

In order to deepen the knowledge about both countries at the level of societies, the parties emphasized their willingness to initiate the activities of the Cervantes Institute representation in Ukraine.

Minister Dastis confirmed the full support of Spain for Ukraine on the euro-integration track, noting that "Ukraine is an important part of the Euro-Atlantic area."

Ministers Pavlo Klimkin and Alfonso Dastis pointed to a high level of cooperation within the framework of international organizations. The recent election of Kyiv and Madrid to the UN Human Rights Council offers additional opportunities for such interaction. The Spanish side has promised its support to the draft resolution of the UN General Assembly "Situation of human rights in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol (Ukraine)”, which tomorrow will be placed on the agenda of the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly.
