Ukrainian Delegation participated in the Global Partnership Working Group meeting in Ottawa

On 30 January – 02 February 2018 the meeting of the Working Group of the G-7-led Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction was held in Ottawa, Canada.

Representatives of GP States Parties, relevant international institutions and NGOs attended the event.

The Ukrainian delegation was led by Dr. Ulana Suprun, Acting Minister of Health of Ukraine, and included officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ministry of Health of Ukraine, Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine, State Agency of Ukraine for Exclusion Zone Management, and Administration of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine.

The event was dedicated to consideration of the most demanding CBRN security issues within the respective working groups. Participants have discussed, inter alia, the status and prospective of implementation of the project proposals aimed at strengthening of CBRN security in Ukraine, including in the context of providing respective technical assistance, as well as possibility of deepening international cooperation in this area. The Ukrainian side also conducted the range of bilateral consultation with key international partners where the expansion of assistance to Ukraine for implementation of respective projects has been discussed.  

Acting Minister of Health of Ukraine Dr. Ulana Suprun in her statement during the plenary session reaffirmed Ukraine's adherence to the goals and principals of the Global Partnership and stressed upon its importance for strengthening capabilities to resist today’s threats and challenges in the area of WMD proliferation, including its terrorist dimension. Dr. U.Suprun underlined that chemical and biological threats are being underestimated and emphasized that reducing the threats posed by nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and materials requires cooperation among states. Having drawn attention of participants to continuous violation by the Russian Federation of the fundamental norms and principles of international law, in particular with regard to occupation of the Ukraine's Autonomous Republic of Crimea and military aggression in the east of our Ukraine, she stressed upon the importance of international assistance to Ukraine in the area of CBRN security strengthening.

Cooperation with Ukraine remains one of the priorities of the Global Partnership. The GP working group meeting confirmed the intent of the participating countries to further deepen the dialogue on strengthening CBRN security, and demonstrated the readiness of donors to provide financial and advisory assistance for the implementation of projects aimed at countering the proliferation of weapons and materials of mass destruction and strengthening international security as a whole.
