Dedication ceremony of the Ukrainian-Famine Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial took place in downtown Washington D.C.
On November 7, 2015 the dedication ceremony of the Ukrainian-Famine Genocide (Holodomor) Memorial took place in downtown Washington D.C.
On that day, over three thousands Ukrainians from America and Canada as well as numerous friends who witnessed this historic event gathered near Union Station in the US capital, where the ceremony took place.
Honorary guest of the event was the First Lady of Ukraine Maryna Poroshenko, who presented a video address from the President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.
The ceremony was also attended by Congressman Sander Levin, who is the author of the Bill, which allowed the Government of Ukraine to install the Memorial on land of DC, Representative Marcy Kaptur, Special Assistant to US President Charles Kapchyn, who read the official release by the White House, Chairman of the National Committee on US Recognition of the Holodomor as Genocide Michael Sawkiw, the author of the monument’s project Larysa Kurylas, famine survivors as well as religious, cultural and public figures.
Also, the ceremony featured broadcast videos from Senators Chuck Schumer and Rob Portman as well as addresses from former US President George W. Bush, presidential candidates - former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Governor Jeb Bush and Senator Marco Rubio.
As part of the activities to mark the opening of the monument, exhibition dedicated to Holodomor in Ukraine was opened at the premises of the Union Station, arousing great interest among the American public and guests of US capital.
On November 8, worship and commemorative concert of Ukrainian American creative teams and solo performers will be held in Ukrainian Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches.
