President Zelenskyy expressed disappointment with the decision of the PACE on the delegation of the Russian Federation and reminded of the need to release the captured Ukrainian sailors

25 June, 13:03

I am disappointed with the decision of the PACE to accept the credentials of the delegation of the Russian Federation without restrictions.

Last week I discussed this issue with the President of France and the Federal Chancellor of Germany. I was trying to convince Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel that the return of the Russian delegation to PACE is possible only after Russia fulfils the Assembly’s fundamental requirements.

I regret that our European partners did not listen to us and chose to act differently.

I am grateful to the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation and to the friendly national delegations who had fought bravely to the end.

The need to protect human and citizens’ rights as the highest democratic values became the main argument for Russia’s return.
I hope that, while striving to uphold democratic values, nobody was distracted by the thoughts of values of a material nature.

I am also looking forward to seeing the supporters of the Russian delegation’s return into the Assembly, an organization that has been upholding the rule of law in Europe for 70 years, fight for and demand a different return: that of the Ukrainian sailor POW’s.
I would like to remind that today, 25 June, is the deadline to fulfil that order of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
We look forward to seeing the declared messages regarding the rule of law being put into practice.
