Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly condemns the terrorist attack on the military base of the peacekeeping African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), which led to numerous casualties among peacekeeping personnel.
Ukraine as the initiator of elaboration of the Convention on the Safety of United Nations and Associated Personnel (1994), calls for taking immediate effective measures to prevent future attacks on peacekeeping personnel on the territory of Somalia and bringing of those responsible to justice.
Terrorist attacks are unacceptable irrespective of their target. The death of the peacekeepers called to bring peace to Somalia and calm to neighboring countries is particularly blatant and cynical challenge to security for the East African region and the entire world community. In this regard, Ukraine as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council supports active discussion of the AMISOM activity and the situation in Somalia, as well as measures to enhance the safety of peacekeepers.
We express our sincere condolences to the Government of Kenya and the families of those killed and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded.
