Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Leonid Kozhara met with the PACE Monitoring Committee co-rapporteurs Marietta de Pourbaix-Lundin and Mailis Reps, who visit Ukraine to discuss progress in fulfilling the obligations and commitments to the Council of Europe taken by Ukraine when it became a member-state of the Organization.
The Minister underlined that the strategic course of Ukraine on European integration remains unchanged. He said that the Council of Europe plays an important role in bringing national legislation in the sphere of human rights and the rule of law in correspondence with the European standards.
During the meeting the sides exchanged views on reforms undertaken in Ukraine, particularly in the context of PACE recommendations.
The Minister noted the significance of the constitutional reform initiated by the President of Ukraine, adoption of the new Criminal Procedure Code and the Law of Ukraine On the Bar as well as preparation of draft law On the Prosecutor’s Office.
Leonid Kozhara emphasized the importance of expert advice and assistance of the Council of Europe, provided by the Venice Commission as well as in the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine for 2011-2014, which is an effective tool of the Organization to assist our country in the process of reforms as well as in meeting its statutory commitments and obligations to the Council Europe.
