For the first time in the history of Ukraine – EU relations the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine was invited to participate in the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
Pavlo Klimkin informed foreign affairs ministers from the EU member states about the provisions and progress achieved in implementation of the peace plan of Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko on the settlement of the situation in the eastern regions of Ukraine. He stated that consistent implementation of this plan would facilitate the de-escalation and comprehensive national dialogue.
The Minister underlined the firm intention of the Ukrainian Government to carry out systemic reforms, including a constitutional reform and the one aimed at decentralization of power, which would become the key elements to secure peace and stability in Ukraine.
He thanked the EU side for solidarity and consistent support of Ukraine at current difficult times and noted that the expected signing of the economic part of the Association Agreement will open qualitatively new prospects for Ukraine to become a successful democracy, economically and politically integrated into the European Community.
The Ukrainian Government is ready to work hard on implementation of the Association Agreement, Minister said. In this context P.Klimkin mentioned the ongoing efforts to create a national coordination system of European integration, which would cooperate closely with the newly established by the European Commission Support Group for Ukraine.
The Minister also welcomed the decision of the EU Council to launch the second phase of the Visa Liberalization Action Plan for the citizens of Ukraine. He expressed hope for further constructive cooperation in the gas sector and confirmed Ukraine’s interest in deployment as soon as possible of the ESDP mission in Ukraine to assist in security sector reform.
