On April 4th 2018 in the Kyiv Taras Shevchenko park on the occasion of the International Mine Action Awareness Day, Ukrainian officials and representatives of international organizations called for the protection and safety of 2 million Ukrainian men, women and children in the territories affected by the Russian aggression. They face constant life threat due to contamination from landmines and explosive remnants of war.
“Issue of landmine and explosive remnants contamination is critical in Donbas affecting thousands of civilians regularly. We thank the international organizations and donor countries for their continued support Ukraine with demining and mine clearance efforts” Deputy Foreign Minister Vasyl Bodnar stated during the opening ceremony.
During the event Ministry of Defense, State Emergency Service of Ukraine, State Special Transport Service and National Police as well as foreign partners demonstrated demining equipment, particularly robots, mine detectors, protective demining suits, equipment for underwater demining, transportation vehicles for equipment and personnel as well as dummy mines. Participants of the event had the opportunity to receive brochures with the information regarding the proper behavior on territories with increased mine danger.
Such public awareness event, visited by a lot of children is extremely urgent for Ukraine which is reported to be one of the most explosive affected countries.
