Ignoring the relevant recommendations of the MFA of Ukraine, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Hungary Mr.Péter Szijjártó visited on July 16, 2019 the town of Berehove in the Zakarpattia region of Ukraine, where took part in a number of public events.
The Embassy of Hungary in Ukraine officially informed the MFA of Ukraine that Minister Szijjártó paid that visit upon invitation of Mr. Vasyl Brenzovytch, Member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, who is campaigning at the early elections to the Ukrainian Parliament.
According to Article 74 of the Law of Ukraine "On elections of people's deputies of Ukraine", participation in election campaign is prohibited for foreign citizens and persons without citizenship, including in public events, which are held in support of or with support of political party or candidate for memebrship in the Parliament.
At the same time, Article 41 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations obliges that all persons enjoying privileges and immunities have to respect the laws and regulations of the receiving States. They also have a duty not to interfere in the internal affairs of that State.
The MFA will ask the competent authorities of Ukraine to provide the legal assessment of this situation.
