Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine welcomes the adoption by the majority of the United Nations General Assembly resolution entitled “Territorial Integrity of Ukraine” (100 votes in favour, 11 votes against).
By the adoption of this resolution the main political and representative body of the United Nations has reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine in accordance with its internationally recognized borders. The General Assembly called on not to recognize any alterations of the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol under the illegal referendum.
The Russian Federation has been sent a clear message regarding unacceptability of actions aimed at partial or complete disruption of the national unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine, including any attempts to alter the borders of our state through the threat or use of force or any other unlawful means. By the provisions of the resolution, the Russian Federation has been called upon to proceed immediately to a peaceful settlement through political dialogue and refrain from any unilateral actions as well as to participate fully in the international mediation efforts.
The broad international support,as for United Nations General Assembly resolution on critical political issues, as well as 47 sponsors of the Resolution from different regions of the world have become another victory of common sense over the language of force and demonstrated strong support of Ukraine in time of the Russia’s military aggression.
We regret about the Russian Federation vote "against" the resolution, which is entirely based on the UN Charter principles. Being unable to veto the decision of the United Nations General Assembly, this state exerted every effort to mobilize its satellite countries with the lowest democracy rates. As they say, “A man is known by the company he keeps”. By this step and being the only state among the Security Council Member States that voted against the resolution on Ukraine on March 15, 2014, Russia lost another chance to come back to the family of civilized countries and further isolated itself at the international arena.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its gratitude to all UN member states, which co-sponsored and supported the United Nations General Assembly resolution entitled "Territorial integrity of Ukraine", and, together with Ukraine, contributed to promotion and adoption of it.
