On August 14, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, held a meeting with the Chief Executive and Chief Nuclear Inspector of the United Kingdom's Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR), Mark Foy, and the Director General of the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of the Republic of Finland, Petteri Tiippana.
The participants discussed the threat posed by Russia's aggressive actions towards nuclear facilities in Ukraine. They emphasized the importance of consolidating international efforts to ensure the safety of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, as well as the need to strengthen sanctions against Russia's nuclear sector.
During the meeting, Andrii Sybiha stressed, "The only way to eliminate the nuclear threat arising from Russia's criminal actions is to return full control over all nuclear facilities within Ukraine's internationally recognized borders to the competent Ukrainian authorities, including the demilitarization and de-occupation of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant as a first priority."
Ukraine is interested in further close cooperation with international partners in countering nuclear threats from Russia and actively involving the international community in implementing Point 1, "Radiation and Nuclear Safety," of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's Peace Formula.
