On 15 April the ministers of foreign affairs of Estonia Eva-Maria Liimets, Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs and Lithuania Gabrielius Landsbergis visited Kyiv at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba to demonstrate solidarity of the Baltic States with Ukraine against the backdrop of destabilizing activity by the Russian Federation.
Foreign Minister of Ukraine informed his colleagues about the build-up of troops by Russia in proximity to the Ukrainian border and the aggravation of the security situation in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
Dmytro Kuleba specifically focused on the Russian propaganda, which serves as a cover for Russia's destabilizing activities against Ukraine: “The Baltic countries are well aware how to be an object of the toxic Russian propaganda. At the same time, the Ministers were shocked to know the scale of demonization of the Ukrainians and misinformation that comes not only from the Russian talk shows, but also from the statements of the Russian officials: they are openly threatening Ukraine with war and destruction of the Ukrainian statehood”.
The ministers discussed joint actions aimed at countering the Russian aggression and strengthening support for Ukraine on the path to its membership in the EU and NATO.
Dmytro Kuleba urged, in particular, to implement additional economic sanctions against Russia and to strengthen Ukraine’s defence capabilities in case of further escalation of the situation by Russia.
"It is important to make it clear that the consequences for Russia for its military adventures will be very painful," said Foreign Minister Kuleba, emphasizing Ukraine's commitment to the politico-diplomatic settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian armed conflict.
The Foreign Ministers of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania strongly condemned the build-up of the Russian troops at the border with Ukraine and called on Russia to stop its provocations.
They also stated that they clearly distinguish who is the aggressor state and who is defending its territory.
Dmytro Kuleba thanked the ministers for foreign affairs of the Baltic States for their unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and for their determination to engage the EU and NATO support to deter the Russian aggression, and for the concerted efforts within the UN, OSCE and other international organizations.
"Ukraine has reliable friends in defending its statehood," said the Ukrainian Minister.
The Baltic Partners have voiced their support for Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO, which should significantly strengthen security and stability in Europe and bolster the Euro-Atlantic partnership.
The parties agreed to enhance bilateral and multilateral cooperation in the field of security and defence, providing mutual support in military-technical cooperation.
They have also agreed to facilitate the exchange of information and data necessary to strengthen security and defence, counter aggressive propaganda, disinformation and other types of hybrid threats in their common neighbourhood, coordinate efforts to address common challenges in the energy security.
Following the talks, the ministers adopted the Joint Statement.
