On January 26, 2021, First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova took part in a virtual High-Level Replenishment Conference for the Peacebuilding Fund.
The Conference, convened by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres, was co-chaired by President of the Republic of Sierra Leone Julius Maada Bio, Prime Minister of the Republic of Sudan Abdalla Adam Hamdok, Foreign Minister of Canada Marc Garneau and Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs of Germany Heiko Maas.
In her remarks, Emine Dzhaparova noted that Ukraine considers ensuring peace in the world, including in Ukraine, a critical challenge of today. “We have supported a call by the UN Secretary-General to end hostilities worldwide at the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic. Regrettably, Russia failed to hear that call and continues the aggression against Ukraine”, she stated.
The First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine made a particular emphasis on the need to put prevention in the focus of the UN peace efforts. “Also, it is a principled position of Ukraine that a tailored approach was elaborated towards each particular conflict and crisis situation. These situations’ root causes should be taken into account and that is particularly important in case of interstate conflicts”, Emine Dzhaparova pointed out.
The First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine underlined the cruciality of effective and efficient fund utilization for the ultimate success of peacebuilding efforts. According to her, it is also important to streamline budgeting to support concrete nationally owned priorities and efforts.
“Access to affected populations, especially in occupied territories, protection of human rights and promotion of the role of women and youth in peace activities, mainstreaming environment in peacebuilding remain other core tasks”, the Ukrainian diplomat emphasized.
