On 24 August, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Mariana Betsa held a meeting with the Director-General of the United Nations Office at Vienna (UNOV) and Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Monica Juma.

Mariana Betsa thanked Monica Juma as the representative of the UN Secretary-General for her visit to Ukraine on a day of particular significance for our state, and for taking part in the events dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Ukraine's Independence.

The Deputy Minister briefed her counterpart on Ukraine's efforts to restore a just and lasting peace, as well as on the deterioration of the security and humanitarian situation caused by intensified massive Russian missile and drone attacks on civilian infrastructure. Mariana Betsa called on UN entities to step up support for the restoration of Ukraine's energy infrastructure ahead of the winter period.

The parties also paid particular attention to the threats to freedom of navigation in the Black Sea and to global food security posed by Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports and civilian vessels. The Deputy Minister highlighted the importance of an active UN role in halting such attacks, restoring freedom of navigation, and ensuring Russia's compliance with its obligations under international law.

The interlocutors further discussed prospects for developing Ukraine's cooperation with UNODC. Mariana Betsa highly appreciated the practical support provided by the Office and underscored the significance of strengthening its presence in Ukraine, expanding expert and technical assistance, and implementing joint projects.

Following the meeting, the parties agreed to maintain close coordination with a view to strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and UNODC.
