The 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference opened in Samarkand

On October 30, the 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference, the highest body of the Organisation, was opened in Samarkand (Uzbekistan), where member states would determine the strategic directions of the Organisation's activities.

The Ukrainian delegation took part in the General Conference, being represented at the Opening ceremony by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, President of the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO Mariana Betsa, Head of the National Television and Radio Broadcasting Council of Ukraine Olha Herasymiuk, and Permanent Representative of Ukraine to UNESCO Vadym Omelchenko. The Ukrainian delegation is headed by Minister for Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha.

During the session, key issues in the fields of education, science, culture, communication, and information will be discussed, and decisions made that will determine global priorities for the upcoming years.

During the opening session of the General Conference, the President of the General Conference was elected, the Vice-Presidents of the General Conference and the Chairpersons of the main Commissions were approved.

The Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to UNESCO, Khondker Mohammad Talha, was elected President of the UNESCO General Conference.

Ukraine was elected Vice-Chair of the UNESCO General Conference from Regional Group II.

The agenda of session includes the approval of the new Director-General of UNESCO, elections to the Executive Board of the Organisation, and the adoption of important decisions in the context of UNESCO's program activities, including those regarding Ukraine.

The 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference will last until November 13, 2025.
