On April 14, the UNESCO Executive Board, at its 221st session, supported Ukraine’s initiative to declare November 27 the International Day of Engagement in Science for Sustainable Development.

“This day will promote science and encourage youth worldwide to participate in scientific research. In our view, both aims are critical for sustainable development. Even in times of war, Ukraine cares about the future, because we are defending not only our right to exist, but also a better future for our children and the entire international community”, emphasized Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha.

November 27 is a symbolic date for our state, as it marks the birthday of the outstanding Ukrainian scientist Borys Paton and the founding day of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Following the voting results, the UNESCO Executive Board, which consists of 58 member states of the Organization, adopted the relevant decision by a majority vote.

The Ukrainian delegation emphasized in its statement that the purpose of celebrating this day is to draw attention to science, involve young people in scientific activities, and popularize scientific education.

The decision adopted by the Executive Board confirms UNESCO’s efforts to promote education and science for sustainable development and scientific literacy, involving youth, who are a priority group for UNESCO, including with the aim of creating an enabling environment for a safe and civilized existence in the interests of future generations.
