Acting Foreign Minister of Ukraine Andrii Deshchytsia met with Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Iceland Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson, who pays a working visit to Ukraine.
The meeting was focused on the current issues of internal situation in Ukraine, in the context of the Russian aggression in Crimea, and the prospects for bilateral cooperation in the international arena and at the bilateral level.
Ukrainian Foreign Minister thanked his colleague for a strong support by Iceland of territorial integrity and inviolability of state borders of Ukraine, as well as for the condemnation of so-called "referendum" on March 16th in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
Minister Sveinsson stressed the absolute unacceptability of illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia. He urged the Russians to withdraw its forces and establish constructive cooperation with the Government of Ukraine.
According to the Head of the Icelandic Foreign Ministry, Iceland fully supports the European Union and U.S. sanctions against the Russian Federation and is ready to provide all assistance in finding ways to resolve through diplomatic means very tense situation around the Russian military invasion on Ukrainian soil.
Minister Sveinsson informed that Iceland made a decision to provide financial and other support to the activities of the OSCE monitoring mission in Ukraine, which will begin its work in the nearest future.
They also discussed ways of cooperation between the two countries in the framework of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, and other international and regional organizations, including the Council of Ministers of the Nordic countries under current Iceland's Presidency.
Special attention was paid to the prospects of cooperation in the bilateral format. In particular, the sides noted with satisfaction the substantial growth of trade turnover, made possible mainly due to the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between Ukraine and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), of which Iceland is a member. They agreed to take steps to give effect to intergovernmental agreement on visa facilitation, promoting people to people contacts.
Minister Sveinsson invited his Ukrainian colleague to visit Iceland on an official visit to continue the fruitful dialogue on all issues of mutual interest.
