On 21 August 2014, Minister for Foreign Affaires of Ukraine Pavlo Klimkin met UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos.
During the meeting the sides discussed the practical ways of using the UN mechanism for peaceful settlement of the situation in the Eastern Ukraine, provoked by the Russian aggression, including alleviation of its humanitarian consequences.
The UN representatives emphasized the readiness of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to engage personally in this process through providing “good offices”. The Organization will support in every way possible the efforts aimed at finding diplomatic ways of settlement as well as betterment of the humanitarian situation in the East of the state.
Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine expressed interest in promoting further active cooperation with the United Nations, in particular in the context of the mobilization of humanitarian assistance and monitoring of the situation in the area of protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms in the East and in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
