On 19 March 2018, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Sergiy Kyslytsya received Assistant High Commissioner for Operations at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) George William Okoth-Obbo.
Sergiy Kyslytsya commended UNHCR` efforts, aimed at mitigating the humanitarian consequences of the Russian aggression against Ukraine, as well as at improving national refugee protection system.
The sides discussed the current issues of Ukraine-UNHCR cooperation, particularly addressing large movements of refugees and migrants, strengthening national capacity, as well as UNHCR`s support for humanitarian efforts of the Government of Ukraine.
UNHCR is one of the most active UN agencies that has been providing support to the internally displaced persons in Ukraine. From 2014 to 2017, UNHCR contributed over 77 mln. US dollars in humanitarian assistance to Ukraine, including about 13 mln. US dollars in 2017 only. One of the priority areas of UNHCR`s activities in Ukraine remains promoting the establishment of an effective refugee protection system and developing national legislation in accordance with internationally established standards.
