Emine Dzhaparova: “Occupation of Crimea has taught us: when aggressor is not stopped, he goes further”

On 25 October 2022 the First Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform co-chaired by the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk and the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Gordan Jandroković was held in Zagreb.



The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Croatia Mr.Andrej Plenković,the Head of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Refat Chubarov as well the representatives of the national parliaments and the parliamentary assemblies of the international organizations addressed the Summit participants.



The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the return of Crimea will bring genuine peace because the potential of the Russian aggression will be completely destroyed. He also called on the participants to strengthen the defense, financial and sanctions support of Ukraine and to share with our country their security, legal, economic and infrastructural expertise after the territorial integrity of Ukraine is restored.



The Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk outlined the steps to be undertaken by Ukraine after de-occupation of Crimea for its demilitarization and safe reintegration, for holding accountable those responsible for crimes, for restoration of freedom of speech on the Peninsula and for economic development to make Crimea attractive for foreign and domestic investments.



The Prime Minister of Croatia Andrej Plenković underlined that the Summit is being held against the backdrop of continued Russia’s attacks aimed to inflict as much damage to Ukraine as possible before the winter starts. But the Ukrainian people have shown their strong determination to fight for their freedom and they can fully rely on partners’ support.



In her address the First Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova informed the Summit participants about the current situation in Crimea. «In the last 8 months, under the pretext of liberating Ukrainian people, the invaders have killed and tortured thousands of my compatriots”, - she stated.



Emine Dzhaparova furthermore highlighted the story of the First Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People Nariman Dzhelyal. He was imprisoned by the Russian occupiers for 17 years for participating in the Inaugural Summit of the International Crimea Platform on 23 August 2021.



The First Deputy Minister also welcomed the adoption of the Joint Declaration of the First Parliamentary Summit of the International Crimea Platform. This document reconfirmed the commitment of the partners to continue their political, diplomatic, financial, humanitarian and other support of Ukraine aimed at restoration of its territorial integrity. Partners also declared their intention to implement the decisions of the Inaugural Summit of the International Crimea Platform within the parliamentary dimension.



The Joint Declaration furthermore underlines the readiness of the participants to consider the establishment of the permanent inter-parliamentary Committee of the International Crimea Platform and to develop an effective mechanism to coordinate joint positions on Crimea within the framework of international organizations.



The Summit officially launched the parliamentary dimension of the International Crimea Platform, which will contribute to activities on the leaders’ and experts’ levels.



Summarizing the discussion, the Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Gordan Jandroković expressed his expectation for the effective work of the parliamentary dimension of the International Crimean Platform, which "will lead to the final liberation of Ukraine".
