Statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Hungary’s latest anti-Ukrainian actions
10 March 2026 17:55

We have taken note of the Hungarian Parliament’s adoption of a resolution refusing to support Ukraine’s accession to the EU and opposing further military funding for Ukraine, as well as the government decree and law regarding the so-called “collection agents case.”

None of these steps come as a surprise to the Ukrainian side: such shameful positions by the Hungarian authorities have long been known.

We believe that the vote to refuse support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU sends a signal first and foremost to the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine. Viktor Orbán is effectively “closing” the door to the EU right in front of them.

It is regrettable to note that official Budapest continues to play the role of a Trojan horse within the EU, attempting to block financial and military support in countering Russian aggression, as well as Ukraine’s progress on the path to the EU. Such steps are aimed at holding the European Union hostage. They are in line with Russia’s policy toward the EU, which is aimed at weakening and dividing a united Europe. The Hungarian parliament certainly earned applause today—in Moscow.

It is important to note that the resolution in question does not alter EU rules and has no legal force in the context of Ukraine’s European integration process. This is a political move that should be viewed in the context of the election campaign.

The adoption of a government resolution and a corresponding “law” aimed at “legalizing” the embezzlement of funds from the state-owned Oschadbank of Ukraine are similar political moves. We emphasize the nullity of these decisions; we reiterate the Ukrainian side’s demand for the immediate return of the embezzled funds and its intention to seek justice using all national and international legal instruments.
