The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine welcomes the signing in Ankara on 11 December 2024 the Joint Communiqué between the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and the Federal Republic of Somalia, according to which the territorial integrity of Somalia is ensured, and a solution to the problem of Ethiopia’s access to the sea is proposed.
The Ankara process, launched a few months ago, achieved significant results towards resolving the existing differences in relations between Addis Ababa and Mogadishu on the basis of the UN Charter and the Constitutive Act of the African Union.
We note the constructive mediating role of the President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in consolidating international efforts aimed at resolving the contradictions that arose in relations between Ethiopia and Somalia in early 2024 in compliance with the fundamental principles of international law, the cornerstone of which is respect for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of states.
We are convinced that the parties' full implementation of their commitments will guarantee the establishment of sustainable and long-lasting peace in the Horn of Africa region, which will prevent humanitarian disasters saving the lives of millions of people.
