This week, the decrees of the President of the Republic of Moldova regarding the withdrawal from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) entered into force.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine welcomes the completion of the Republic of Moldova's domestic procedures for withdrawing from the CIS. This sovereign decision reflects Moldova’s consistent and logical foreign policy priorities on its path toward the EU, as well as its commitment to strengthening sovereignty and independence in light of regional and global security threats.
Ukraine consistently supports the aspirations of countries in the region to distance themselves from post-Soviet cooperation formats that have lost their effectiveness and do not meet modern challenges. Similarly, our state is systematically and consistently severing all outdated legal ties with Moscow; in particular, it has recently completed the process of withdrawing from 116 long-dormant de facto agreements concluded within the framework of the CIS.
We are convinced that the further consolidation of efforts between Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova will contribute to strengthening regional security, developing bilateral partnership, and realizing the aspirations of both friendly nations to join the European Union.
