The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine welcomes the adoption of the resolution “European Commitment to a Just and Lasting Peace in Ukraine” by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE).
This document once again reaffirms European unity and solidarity in condemning the illegal, unprovoked, and unjustified ongoing aggressive war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine.
By drawing attention to Russian aggression, the illegal deportation of children, the unlawful detention of civilians, and attacks on critical infrastructure, the resolution underscores the urgent need to hold Russia accountable.
The Assembly’s stance is particularly significant in asserting that any negotiations leading to a just and lasting peace must involve Ukraine, respect its internationally recognized borders and sovereignty, and uphold its right to determine its own future.
PACE’s position that genuine, long-term peace must be achieved from a position of resilience and strong defense capabilities fully aligns with Ukraine’s interests. The principle of “peace through strength” ensures that Ukraine can safeguard its sovereignty and territorial integrity while upholding the rule of law and the values shared by the Council of Europe.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine also welcomes the resolution’s emphasis on the establishment of a comprehensive compensation mechanism and a special tribunal for the crime of aggression against Ukraine. Those responsible for war crimes and human rights violations must be held to account.
The Assembly’s recognition of Ukraine’s progress in implementing reforms in human rights and democratic governance, even under the most challenging conditions of wartime, reaffirms Ukraine’s unwavering commitment to upholding and advancing European standards and principles.
