Mariana Betsa held a meeting with Political Director of Global Affairs Canada David Angell
13 January 2025 20:10

On January 13, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mariana Betsa met with Political Director, Assistant Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Canada (International Security and Political Affairs Branch) David Angell.

The key topic of the discussion was opportunities to strengthen comprehensive support for Ukraine during Canada’s leadership of the Group of Seven this year, particularly in promoting the Peace Formula, Euro-Atlantic integration, practical implementation of security agreements, and holding Russia accountable.

The parties focused on strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities to repel Russia's aggression effectively, enhance coordination to increase sanctions pressure on the aggressor, confiscate frozen Russian assets, and bolster our nation’s energy stability.

“Canada is one of Ukraine’s most significant partners. We are grateful to the Canadian government and its people for their unwavering and comprehensive support. We trust that Canada will continue to advocate for crucial decisions to address the global challenges and security threats posed by Russia's armed aggression against Ukraine. We hope Canada will stick with cooperation with Ukraine while chairing the Group of Seven. Ukraine requires coordinated and collective actions from partner countries to bring an end to Russia's war of aggression and achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for our nation,” Mariana Betsa emphasized.

For his part, David Angell underlined Canada's willingness to offer all possible support to our country within the Group of Seven. He also highlighted the significance of a consolidated international community’s backing for Ukraine in the face of Russia's ongoing armed aggression.

The parties engaged in an in-depth discussion about the preparations for the upcoming meeting of the member states of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children, co-chaired by Ukraine and Canada. They also exchanged insights on the progress achieved through this initiative since the Montreal Conference held in October 2024.
