MFA of Ukraine Announces Winners of the "Historical Residencies 2.0: The Ukrainian Factor in the History of Glorious Victories" Initiative
29 March 2026 22:18

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has concluded the selection of participants for this year’s research initiative, "Historical Residencies 2.0: The Ukrainian Factor in the History of Glorious Victories," implemented within the framework of the "Orlyk Residency: Discovering Ukraine in the World's Archives" project.

The project is aimed at restoring historical truth about Ukraine's role in key processes of European and world history, as well as strengthening the presence of the Ukrainian narrative in international academic discourse.

"We continue to return its history to Ukraine — not as an abstract past, but as the foundation of our subjectivity today. It is about restoring our voice in history, which for centuries they tried to erase, rewrite, or appropriate. By supporting research and opening access to archives, we are systematically returning Ukraine to its rightful place in European and world history," emphasized Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha.

The 2026 selection demonstrated a high level of submitted research, its scientific depth, and relevance for the formation of Ukraine's modern historical narrative.

Based on the results of the competitive selection, the winners of the initiative are:

  • Volodymyr Hutsul — with a study of the Battle of Orsha as part of European military history;
  • Vitalii Halatyr — with a project on the role of Ukrainian diplomats in world history, using the Tokarzhevsky-Karashevych and Lototsky families as examples;
  • Liliia Tsyhanenko — with a study of the Ukrainian institutional presence in post-war Europe, 1945–1955;
  • The team of Andrii Sova — with work on the documents of Ivan Bobersky’s personal archive, stored in the National and University Library of Slovenia;
  • Nataliia Kuzovova — with a study of the activities of Ukrainians in the 1920s–1930s through the documents of Polish diplomatic missions;
  • The team of Maryna Trattner — with a project dedicated to the analysis of Simon Derffler’s reports (1667–1693) regarding the struggle for the unification of Ukrainian lands and the activities of the Hetmans.

The Ministry provides comprehensive support to the participants of the initiative, in particular by facilitating access to the world's archives and libraries, developing professional contacts, and implementing research projects.

The first stage of the "Historical Residencies" has already demonstrated the effectiveness of the interaction between diplomacy and science. Restoring little-known pages of Ukrainian history is important not only for Ukraine but also for international partners — for a deeper understanding of our state's contribution to the formation of European history and security. The results of the new research are expected to be presented, inter alia, in book format.

The Ministry expresses its gratitude to all contest participants for their contribution to the strengthening of Ukrainian statehood through science and historical memory.

The project is implemented by the MFA of Ukraine in partnership with MHP.
