On August 31, 2026, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Oleksandr Mishchenko received copies of credentials from the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Osumi Yo.

Oleksandr Mishchenko congratulated Osumi Yo on the commencement of his diplomatic mission to Ukraine, wishing him every success in his responsible position and expressing confidence in the continuity of the traditionally active cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Embassy of Japan in Ukraine, first and foremost on issues of supporting Ukraine amid the Russian Federation ongoing full-scale military invasion.

During the meeting, the sides paid primary attention to the issues of intensifying high-level dialogue, implementing bilateral and multilateral initiatives to strengthen the financial and energy resilience of our state, increasing the level of Ukraine's defense capabilities and developing Ukrainian-Japanese cooperation in the field of security and defense technologies, strengthening sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation and the use of frozen Russian assets for the needs of Ukraine.

Oleksandr Mishchenko thanked the Japanese side for providing financial, humanitarian, technical, military and other types of assistance, in particular, for its support in the field of humanitarian demining and the contribution of Japan’s volunteer movement to supporting Ukraine, as well as for its active participation in the process of recovery of our state.

Osumi Yo confirmed that Japan’s policy of active support for Ukraine remains unchanged, both on a bilateral level and through the G7 and other international mechanisms. He also assured of his readiness to exert maximum efforts for the further development of comprehensive cooperation between our states.
