On 9 October, political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and Romania were held in Bucharest at the level of Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Olexandr Mischenko and State Secretary for Strategic Affairs of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ana Tinca.
During the consultations, the parties discussed the current security situation in the region in the context of Russia's ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine, continued support for Ukraine in countering Russian aggression, the development of the Ukrainian-Romanian strategic partnership, Ukraine's European integration, and cooperation in multilateral formats.
Olexandr Mischenko briefed his Romanian counterparts on the current situation on the frontline and diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russian aggression and achieving a just and lasting peace. Against the backdrop of intensified Russian attacks against Ukraine's civilian population and critical infrastructure, the importance of maintaining international pressure on the aggressor state, including through sanctions, was emphasised, as well as further coordination of efforts to ensure Russia's isolation within international organisations.
In this context, the Ukrainian diplomat expressed gratitude to the Romanian side for its consistent and multifaceted support for Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing aggression.
Particular attention was paid to developing the Ukrainian-Romanian strategic partnership, deepening political and economic dialogue, and advancing defence and military-technical cooperation.
The counterparts discussed cooperation in the areas of energy security, transport and border infrastructure, including the expansion of the network of border crossing points along the Ukrainian-Romanian state border. In this context, they welcomed the joint opening by government delegations on 8 October 2026 of a new border crossing point and bridge connecting Bila Tserkva (Ukraine) and Sighetu Marmației (Romania).
The consultations also addressed issues related to supporting ethnic communities and further developing cooperation in consular affairs.
Considerable attention was devoted to Ukraine's European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Olexandr Mischenko emphasised the importance of Romania's continued support for Ukraine's progress towards European Union membership, particularly the opening of all negotiating clusters.
The parties also focused on developing regional cooperation within the Odesa Triangle format, as well as strengthening security and stability in the Black Sea region.
The parties also exchanged views on Ukrainian exports, ensuring global food security, and further coordinating positions and cooperation within international organisations.
Following the consultations, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining regular political dialogue, deepening the Ukrainian-Romanian strategic partnership, and developing cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
