On 24 February, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Olexandr Mischenko held a meeting with Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland and Chairman of the Council for Cooperation with Ukraine, Paweł Kowal.
The Deputy Minister expressed his sincere gratitude to the Republic of Poland and the Polish people for their consistent and steadfast support, as well as their comprehensive assistance to Ukraine. Since the first days of Russia’s full-scale aggression, Poland has demonstrated genuine solidarity by providing essential support to our state and offering safe shelter to millions of Ukrainians. The Ukrainian people deeply appreciate this profound gesture of brotherhood.
For his part, Paweł Kowal underscored that throughout the entire period of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, Poland has been making every effort to support our state. He reaffirmed Poland’s readiness to continue providing comprehensive assistance to Ukraine with a view to safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Olexandr Mischenko also expressed particular appreciation for the supply of energy equipment aimed at facilitating repair works and ensuring the stable functioning of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure affected by the recent massive Russian attacks.
In particular, within the framework of the initiative of Polish civil society organizations “Warmth from Poland for Kyiv”, approximately 500 generators of varying capacities have been delivered to the capital of Ukraine and other regions, while nearly 1,000 additional generators have been provided by the Government of Poland.
The interlocutors discussed practical steps and a timeline of a preparation for the Ukraine Recovery Conference (URC2026), scheduled to take place in June 2026 in Gdańsk, Poland. In this context, they emphasized the importance of countering negative narratives already being disseminated by Russia with the aim of discrediting and weakening the strategic partnership between the two countries. Olexandr Mischenko expressed hope for close coordination with the Polish side to ensure the proper organization of the event and the achievement of tangible and results-oriented outcomes.
The parties noted significant progress in the mutual granting of permits for search and exhumation works on the territories of Ukraine and Poland, including, in particular, the permit granted on 18 February this year by the Ukrainian side for conducting such works in the former village of Huta Pieniacka in the Lviv region.
In this context, the interlocutors positively noted the preparations for the Ukrainian-Polish Conference (Forum) of Historians, scheduled on 6 May 2026 in Poland, aimed at fostering a constructive and professional dialogue on complex issues of the shared historical past.
Olexandr Mischenko expressed his appreciation for the readiness of the Polish side to ensure the participation of a broad range of historians specializing in Ukrainian-Polish relations across different historical periods. The Deputy Minister also supported the Polish initiative to involve a new generation of scholars from both Poland and Ukraine, including representatives of leading academic institutions such as Harvard University, the University of Alberta, and others. This approach will contribute to ensuring objectivity and academic rigor in future discussions, as well as continuity in further scholarly work on Ukrainian-Polish relations.
