15 October 2025 19:55

On 15 October, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Olexandr Mischenko met with Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Poland in Ukraine, Piotr Łukasiewicz. Director of the Polish Institute in Kyiv, Jarosław Godun, also took part in the meeting.

The Polish side expressed gratitude for the organisation of the visit of Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland Radosław Sikorski to Lviv on 10 October as an honoured guest at the celebrations dedicated to the 95th anniversary of the University of Lviv Diplomatic School and awarding him the title of “Honorary Doctor (Doctor Honoris Causa)” of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

The Deputy Minister highly appreciated the comprehensive assistance that Poland has been providing to our country since the beginning of the Russian full-scale aggression.

The Parties positively noted the high level of political dialogue between our countries and emphasised the importance of its further development.

Olexandr Mischenko noted substantial progress in resolving sensitive issues of the shared historical past and establishing constructive bilateral dialogue on issues of national memory.

In this context, successful cases of search and exhumation work in the former villages of Puzhnyky and Stari Zboishcha in Ukraine were noted, as well as gratitude was expressed to the Polish side for its support for the search work carried out in early October 2025 in the village of Yurechkova in Poland.

According to the Ukrainian diplomat, the efforts of both sides should be further directed towards preventing the excessive politicisation of issues related to our common past and preventing their negative impact on the current development of bilateral relations.

The Deputy Minister emphasised that the permission granted to the Polish side on 13 October by the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communications of Ukraine to conduct search operations in the village of Uhly, Rivne region, is the next concrete step towards the formation of a common future for Ukraine and Poland based on an objective study of past events.

Olexandr Mischenko noted that the Ukrainian side counts on the resumption of the Ukrainian-Polish dialogue between historians as a platform for joint research on complex common history topics of the two nations, primarily through civilised discussion, which aims to provide an objective and unbiased coverage of controversial historical events based on archival documents and other indisputable arguments.

The interlocutors discussed the modalities of holding the first preparatory meeting of historians from the two countries. The Deputy Minister emphasised that the Ukrainian side seeks to hold such a meeting of historians from both countries before the end of 2025. This would be in the interests of both sides, as it would help to eliminate the excessive politicisation of difficult issues in our shared history.
