Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Olexandr Mischenko held a meeting with Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Republic of Poland in Ukraine Piotr Łukasiewicz.
Olexandr Mischenko thanked Poland for its consistent support of Ukraine, as well as for the solidarity demonstrated by Polish society with the Ukrainian people in the face of Russia’s ongoing aggression. For his part, Piotr Łukasiewicz reaffirmed Poland’s readiness to continue providing comprehensive support to Ukraine.
The interlocutors discussed key issues on the agenda of Ukrainian-Polish relations, including the further development of political dialogue, security cooperation, and coordination of joint efforts in response to current challenges, including countering drone threats posed by Russia.
The diplomats also exchanged views on public perceptions in Ukraine and Poland regarding a number of decisions, including the conferral on a unit of the Special Operations Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine of the honorary title “Named after the Heroes of the UPA”.
Olexandr Mischenko stressed that, in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine, which has been ongoing for more than four years, maintaining broad public support for Ukraine’s defenders remains of critical importance. He noted that, for many Ukrainians, the historical legacy of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) is primarily associated with the struggle for independence, resistance to Soviet rule, and opposition to the occupation of Ukrainian territories by the USSR.
At the same time, the Deputy Minister emphasized that the shared history of Ukraine and Poland also includes tragic chapters, particularly those related to the Volyn tragedy. In this context, he underscored the importance of a professional and objective study of the shared past, including through continued dialogue between historians and experts of both countries. The Ukrainian-Polish Congress of Historians, held in Poland on 6–8 May 2026, was highlighted as an important platform for promoting mutual understanding and reconciliation.
The interlocutors noted the importance of continuing joint efforts to address complex issues of historical memory in a spirit of mutual respect and responsibility, emphasizing that an objective assessment of the past is an important prerequisite for mutual understanding and a shared future.
According to Olexandr Mischenko, further progress on issues related to historical memory requires continued constructive cooperation, including the reciprocal granting of permits for search and exhumation works in both countries. In this regard, the interlocutors positively noted the activities of the Joint Working Group operating under the auspices of the Ministries of Culture of Ukraine and Poland.
The interlocutors agreed on the importance of preserving constructive dialogue, maintaining a balanced and responsible approach, and demonstrating mutual respect when addressing issues that remain particularly sensitive for both Ukrainian and Polish societies.
