On 21 April 2021, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, Minister for Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov and Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada Marco Mendicino inaugurated the first meeting of the Ukrainian-Canadian Mobility Working Group.
"Ukraine pays special attention to the Ukrainian-Canadian dialogue in the field of migration and visas. Today we are opening a new page in Ukrainian-Canadian relations by launching a new format of bilateral cooperation," Minister Dmytro Kuleba said. Minister Arsen Avakov, for his part, stressed that the Ukrainian-Canadian Working Group on Mobility is to become an effective tool for ensuring proper communication between the competent authorities of both countries and intensifying the bilateral dialogue with aim to improve mobility.
The meeting of the working group, attended by representatives of relevant ministries and departments of Ukraine and Canada, became an important platform for substantive exchange of views on areas of effective cooperation between the governments of both countries in the field of migration and mobility, and especially the potential for increased temporary mobility of Ukrainian and Canadian youth, as well as actual challenges in the field of migration policies, prospective areas of cooperation between migration and border agencies of both countries.
For reference: On 27 January 2021, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, Minister for Internal Affairs of Ukraine Arsen Avakov and Minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada Marco Mendicino signed a Letter of intent on the Establishment of the Canada-Ukraine Mobility Working Group between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine and the Department of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship of Canada. The Participants will focus their dialogue within the MWG on the following areas: identifying means to facilitate mobility, once the COVID‑19 travel restrictions are eased; effective exchange of information regarding labour opportunities; improving mobility opportunities for Canadian and Ukrainian youth; exchanging best practices on migration management; addressing other areas of concern and interest, including border management, irregular migration and integrity risks etc.
