On September 21, 2020 Ukrainian-American online consultations on counter nuclear smuggling took place in a framework of the 64th IAEA General Conference.
Delegation of Ukraine was headed by the First Deputy of the Head of the State Border Guard Service (SBGS) of Ukraine. Deputy Director General of the NSC "Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology", representatives of the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, diplomats of the MFA and SBGS officials also joined the negotiations.
The parties stressed the effective cooperation and progress in this area, in particular, due to U.S. provision of radiation detection systems at the 89th international border site and critical interior locations in Ukraine, along with associated U.S. support to enable long-term capabilities in counter nuclear smuggling. These are radiation control systems, as well as portable devices for radiation control and radiation reconnaissance systems on Ukraine’s international borders and administrative boundaries with Russia-occupied and Russia-controlled territories.
During the meeting, the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine and the US Department of Energy have agreed to sign a joint statement on the 15th anniversary of bilateral cooperation on counter nuclear smuggling.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhance capabilities and develop cooperation to counter nuclear smuggling that would strengthen global security.
