On January 12, an extraordinary meeting of the Ukraine-NATO Council in the format of the Political Committee was held at the NATO headquarters in Brussels. The meeting was convened at the request of the Mission of Ukraine to NATO in connection with the recent massive Russian shelling of Ukraine and, in particular, Russia's use of a medium-range ballistic missile "Oreshnik".
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Olexandr Mischenko, Deputy Minister of Defense Serhii Boiev and Deputy Minister of Energy Roman Andarak joined the online meeting.
Ukrainian representatives informed allies about the current security situation and systematic attacks by the Russian Federation on Ukraine's critical energy infrastructure. They emphasized that these actions are aimed at causing a humanitarian disaster in the winter period, depriving the Ukrainian civilian population of electricity, water and heat. The officials emphasized that the situation in the energy system remains extremely difficult, and Ukraine urgently needs additional means of its protection, in particular, strengthening air defense.
Addressing the participants of the meeting, Olexandr Mischenko thanked the allies for the support provided and called for its further strengthening, emphasizing that it is strong international support that is the best response to Russian attacks, which should not go unpunished.
For his part, Serhii Boiev noted that during 2025, the Russian Federation significantly increased the number of missiles and drones used during attacks against Ukraine. According to him, this is a direct indication of the Russian Federation's orientation exclusively to further escalation. He also emphasized that Russia's use of a medium-range ballistic missile near NATO's borders is another manifestation of its aggressive policy and complete lack of desire for peace.
The Deputy Minister of Defense detailed Ukraine's urgent needs for missiles for air defense systems, in particular Patriot and NASAMS, and also urged allies to invest in the PURL program and the development of defense production, in particular in the field of interceptor drones.
Roman Andarak informed the participants of the meeting about the measures taken by Ukraine to ensure the stable functioning of the energy system, and also outlined the priority needs for means to protect, repair and restore damaged energy infrastructure facilities and maintain its stability.
The Allies, for their part, strongly condemned the Russian attacks, which are a manifestation of outright terror against the Ukrainian civilian population, and reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine and readiness to provide the necessary assistance.
