Olexandr Mischenko conducted Ukrainian-Polish political consultations
12 January 2026 14:04

On 12 January, Ukrainian-Polish political consultations took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. The delegations at the talks were led by Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister, Oleksandr Mischenko, and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, Marcin Bosacki.

Before the meeting began, O.Mischenko and M.Bosacki paid tribute to the fallen defenders of our country by laying flowers at the Wall of Remembrance of the Fallen for Ukraine.

In light of recent peace initiatives, O.Mischenko emphasised that Ukraine is committed to restoring comprehensive, just and lasting peace based on international law and the UN Charter, stressing that during the peace talks, Ukraine counts on strict adherence to the principle of territorial integrity and sovereignty of our state, as well as the provision of legally binding security guarantees to Ukraine.

In this regard, the Ukrainian diplomat highly appreciated the participation of Prime Minister of the Republic of Poland D.Tusk in the talks of the Coalition of the Willing, particularly at the meeting in Paris on 6 January, and thanked Poland for its contribution to the PURL initiative for the purchase of American weapons for Ukraine.

The parties discussed opportunities to deepen military-technical cooperation, including the possible implementation of joint projects under the SAFE programme.

O.Mischenko noted that Ukraine appreciates Poland's unwavering support on our path to EU membership and is grateful to Poland and all European Union leaders for the European Council's decision to provide Ukraine with €90 billion in financial support in 2026-2027.

The Deputy Minister thanked the Polish side for its willingness to organise a conference on Ukraine's recovery in Poland in June 2026. In this regard, the schedule for URC2026 preparations was discussed.

The parties discussed in detail the complex aspects of their shared history and noted the need to build mutual understanding of issues of national memory for both nations. Significant progress was noted in the mutual granting of permits for search and exhumation work on the territory of Ukraine and Poland, which has already had a positive impact on bilateral relations.

In this context, the parties welcomed preparations for the Forum of Historians of Ukraine and Poland in spring 2026, with the aim of discussing complex issues of the shared past constructively at a professional level.

The parties also discussed specific initiatives to combat disinformation and prevent the aggressor state, Russia, from driving a wedge between the Ukrainian and Polish peoples.

During the talks, particular attention was paid to Ukrainian-Polish cooperation at the multilateral level and within international organisations, with a view to limiting Russian influence. O.Mischenko expressed gratitude for Poland's support of Ukraine's candidacy for membership in the Executive Council of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons for 2026-2028.

The parties agreed on a schedule of future Ukrainian-Polish meetings at the highest and high levels, and on an operational communication protocol between the foreign ministries of both countries.
