The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine strongly condemns the decision of the Republic of Nicaragua to recognize the territories of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, as well as parts of the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions of Ukraine, that are temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation, as part of the territory of Russia.
We view this decision as an attempt by Managua to undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, a blatant violation of the UN Charter and the core principles of international law. The Nicaraguan regime’s recognition of the so-called “legal personality” of the Russian occupation administration in the Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson regions, as well as the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, is legally null and void, produces no legal effect, and cannot alter the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine.
The Nicaraguan regime has systematically and flagrantly violated its obligations enshrined in the documents establishing diplomatic relations between Ukraine and the Republic of Nicaragua. These documents explicitly state that the Nicaraguan government accepts the proposal to establish and maintain diplomatic relations with Ukraine, "which shall be based on the principles of friendship, cooperation and mutual respect, in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and universally recognized norms of international law."
By supporting Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine, attempting to legitimize the violent seizure of part of Ukraine’s territory, officially recognizing the so-called “Donetsk People’s Republic” and “Luhansk People’s Republic,” and opening an illegal “honorary consulate of Nicaragua” in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea, Ukraine, Nicaragua has aligned itself politically with the aggressor state and demonstrated direct financial and political dependence of the puppet regime in Managua on Moscow.
In response to such unfriendly actions, Ukraine declares the severance of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Nicaragua.
“This decisive diplomatic step clearly signals that Ukraine will continue to respond with the utmost firmness to any attempts to infringe upon its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We will not tolerate any encroachments on our statehood and will take all necessary measures to defend our independence, security, and the inviolability of our borders,” emphasized Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Andrii Sybiha.
