On June 8, 2010 ХІ International Export Control Conference commenced its work. Representatives of governments, think-tanks, non-governmental organizations and industry from more than 70 countries, overall about 300 participants, take part in the Conference. This year the Conference gathered the largest number of participants in comparison with such previous events that were held in other countries. Moreover, for the first time the European Union co-sponsored the Conference.
Deputy Minister of Foreign Affaires of Ukraine Oleksander Horin welcomed participants of the Conference and underlined the important role of this event in the context of the international efforts to curb proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and diversion of conventional weapons.
Besides, in the opening of the Conference took part Deputy Head of the US Mission to Ukraine James Pettit, who emphasized the leading role of Ukraine in disarmament. Among other, he mentioned unprecedented decision of the independent Ukraine to eliminate its nuclear potential that used to be the third on its power in the world.
President of the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control of Germany Dr. Arnold Wallraff greeted participants as well. This Ministry took part in the organization of the Conference on behalf of the European Union.
Dr. Wallraff pointed to the high level of cooperation in the sphere of export control between relevant governmental agencies of Ukraine and Germany. Moreover, he underscored the importance of issues that are on the agenda of the Conference.
In the course of the Conference that will last till June 10, its participants will exchange opinions regarding widening of the international interaction for the sake of prevention of weapons diversion to illegal users and present national systems of export control.
