On 22 March 2021, the Interactive Dialogue on Ukraine took place in Geneva within the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council. UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif presented the 31st report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on the human rights situation in Ukraine, including the situation in its temporarily occupied territories.
During her speech, First Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Emine Dzhaparova briefed the UN Human Rights Council on the ongoing gross violations of human rights and international law, including international humanitarian law, committed by the Russian occupation administration in Crimea. She spoke on Russia's militarization of the Ukrainian peninsula, the systematic policy aimed at changing the demographic composition of its population, as well as about the destruction of UNESCO's heritage.
The First Deputy Minister informed the Council about the ongoing repressions in Crimea, including the illegal detention of journalist Vladyslav Yesypenko, cases of ethnic and religious discrimination, in particular against the Crimean Tatar people, and the ousting of independent media.
Emine Dzhaparova drew the attention of UN member states and OHCHR to the Ukrainian initiative to establish the Crimea Platform as a new consultative and coordination format for the deoccupation of the Crimean peninsula. She expressed hope that OHCHR would be actively involved in supporting the platform's objectives and goals.
The diplomat gave assurances of Ukraine's readiness to continue active cooperation with OHCHR in order to ensure respect of human rights throughout Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, called on UN human rights mechanisms to strengthen monitoring of Russia’s crimes against human rights in the occupied territories of Donbas.
