On March 20, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Mariana Betsa met with Thórdís Gylfadóttir, the Special Envoy of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe on the Situation of Children of Ukraine.
The counterparts discussed Ukraine’s cooperation with the Council of Europe in implementing initiatives aimed at ensuring the return of Ukrainian children illegally deported by the aggressor state, as well as their rehabilitation, provision of proper conditions, and protection of their rights.
The Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of the Special Envoy’s role, as well as the contributions of the Consultation Group on the Children of Ukraine and the Parliamentary Network on the Situation of Ukrainian Children, in addressing the challenges faced by Ukrainian children.
Both sides also reviewed measures and further steps within Ukraine-led initiatives, including Bring Kids Back UA and the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children. They highlighted the critical role of mediator states and the support Ukraine receives from key international organizations.
Mariana Betsa expressed deep gratitude for the Council of Europe’s unwavering support since the onset of Russia’s full-scale aggression. She also underlined the Organization’s crucial role in international efforts to ensure accountability and justice.
For her part, Thórdís Gylfadóttir reaffirmed her commitment to cooperation with partners from Ukraine and other countries in protecting children's rights, facilitating their return to Ukraine, and ensuring their reintegration. She confirmed the Council of Europe’s readiness to utilize all available mechanisms to provide assistance, advocacy, and support within relevant international formats.
