On June 19, 2020, the political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Guatemala took place via video conference. The consultations were led by Yevheniy Yenin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and Carlos Ramiro Martinez Alvarado, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala.
The diplomats expressed the readiness to develop cooperation in various fields, where trade is a key issue of bilateral relations. The parties discussed the drafts agreements, which are under the consideration by both countries. According to Yevheniy Yenin, the signing and implementation of such treaties will promote bilateral trade turnover.
Another issue of the negotiations was countering Russian aggression in Donbas, as well as the necessity to consolidate the efforts of the international community in order to restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine.
Yevheniy Yenin expressed his gratitude to Guatemala for its consistent support of Ukraine’s initiatives in the framework of the UN. "Ukraine appreciates Guatemala's support on the international arena in countering Russian aggression," he said.
The parties also shared the experiences to overcome the implications of the COVID-19 for the economies of both countries.
