The International Olympic Committee's decision to cancel its recommendations on restricting the participation of Russian athletes is a worrying signal for the entire international sports community.

The IOC has repeatedly emphasised that the Olympic movement is founded on the values of peace, respect for human dignity and responsibility. That is why any steps that may be perceived as a return of the aggressor state to full participation in international sport are a cause for serious concern.

We take note of the IOC's statement that the question of the use of Russian state symbols during the Olympic Games will be considered separately. We hope that when this decision is made, not only sporting but also moral principles will prevail.

We call on the governments of states hosting international sporting competitions not to allow the display of state symbols of the Russian Federation on their territory. Under this flag, an unprovoked war continues, civilians are killed every day, and Ukrainian cities are being destroyed. The symbols of the aggressor state cannot become an element of a sporting celebration.

We also appeal to international sports federations with a call to remember that sport is strongest when it remains true to its fundamental values — respect for human life, human dignity, freedom, justice and peace.

Ukraine will continue to work together with international partners to uphold these principles and prevent world sport from being used to legitimise aggression.
